The Summit Trail is one of the major highlights of Mount Kinabalu. If you are healthy and fit, it can be an extremely satisfying and achievable climb. Allow at least two days for the outing. Make sure you are equipped for wet and cold weather. Your are required to register for the climb and a guide is compulsory. If desired, porters may be engaged.

mount kinabalu

Basically there is two route to The Summit Trail: Timpohon Gate (Kinabalu Park) and Mesilau Trail.

Timpohon Gate: - After registration and payments of fees at the Park Headquarters, head for Timpohan Gate (1,866 meters), where the ascent begins. Altitudes range from 1,981 at the first rest stop to cover over 4,000 meters at the peak. The climb can be challenging and strenuous. You may choose to hike or drive the 5.5 kilometres from Kinabalu Park to the starting point. Most climbers leave Kinabalu Park before 8.00am, taking the road to Timpohon Gate.

Mesilau Trail: - The Mesilau Trail is ideal for climbers interested in flora and fauna. At 5.7 kilometers, it is longer and more challenging, taking 5 to 6 hours compared to 2 to 3 hours from the trail that starts at Timpohon Gate. Opened in 1998, it joins the Summit Trail at Layang-Layang.

Along series Rest Stop (Pondok), we reached…

Laban Rata Resthouse - The overnight stop over awaits climbers at 3,270 meters. Named Panar Laban, this shelter can take up to 140 persons, facilities include the Laban Rata Rest House which can accommodate 66 guests comfortably. It offers running water, electricity, heaters, blankets, indoor showers, toilets and a restaurant. Most climbers arrive in the late afternoon. After a long and strenuous day, Panar Laban’s warm beds, hot meals and showers help prepare them for the next day’s excitement. The second phase of the journey starts before day break. Climbers leave for the summit at 3.00am, trekking and climbing in the dark. The trail ahead includes a series of wooden ladders, fashioned from tree roots and branches. Just below Sayat Sayat at about 3,600 meters, the trails evens out. The bare granite does not support much plant life. Vegetation is sparse and severely stunted. Easier walking is possible on the flatter terrain before reaching a series of small cairns that are linked by guide ropes all the way up to Low’s Peak at 4,095 meters.

The Peaks - The spectacular Low’s Gully divides Mount Kinabalu into its Western and Eastern Plateaux. There are several trails leading to lesser peaks besides Low’s Peak. These are very tough routes and intending climbers must obtain written permission from the Park Authorities for any exploration outside the conventional trails. Experienced guides are compulsory.
Western Summit Plateau
Attractions include South Peak (3,921 meters) ands St John’s Peak (4,090 meters). Both may be climbed in a half day but are recommended only for more experienced climbers. St. John is particularly tricky. Other major peaks are Ugly Sisters (4,086 meters), Alexander (3,998meters) and Victoria (4,090 meters).
The terrain on Western Plateau is rocky but smooth, showing the effects glaciation. The trail calls for use of ropes to negotiate the challenging climb.
